NS Record Lookup
Find the authoritative nameservers a domain delegates to, with their IP addresses.
Frequently asked questions
What is an NS record?
NS (name server) records say which servers hold the authoritative DNS records for a domain. They are set at your registrar and, usually, mirrored in your DNS host's zone.
How do I find who hosts the DNS for a domain?
Look up its NS records. Names such as ns1.cloudflare.com or ns-123.awsdns-45.org identify the DNS provider.
How many nameservers should a domain have?
At least two, on separate networks, so DNS keeps working when one fails. Most providers give you two to four.
Why do NS records at the registrar differ from the zone?
The registrar publishes the delegation at the parent (such as .com). The zone itself can list different NS records. A mismatch causes intermittent failures and is worth fixing.
How long do NS changes take?
Delegation records at the registry often have a TTL of 24 to 48 hours, so a nameserver change can take that long to reach every resolver.
What does a nameserver with no IP address mean?
The nameserver name does not resolve, so resolvers cannot reach it. Add a glue record or fix the DNS of the nameserver's own domain.
